Make Hay While the Sun Shines...

What does that mean?  It means act while conditions are favorable.  It's not news by now that the macro economics of the golf business isn't good.  So where does that leave you?  It means you're competing for golfers, expanding your services, maximizing your opportunities, controlling expenses or losing money.

Make hay while the sun shines.  My wife says it all the time.  Especially in reference to getting stuff done around the house when the kids are taking a nap.  I think it's a perfect way to describe the golf business this time of year.

It's spring time, and if you can't make money in the spring you sure aren't going to make it any other time.

So, why not maximize your spring profits. So many times, you will put a little money in your pocket in the spring and be content when in fact you could put another 10 to 15 percent in your pocket.  Then things slow down again and you get worried, sound familiar?  Instead, you should work just a little harder in the spring and maximize all your opportunities while they last.

Here are four ideas to make hay while the sun shines:
  • Sell prepaid rounds - golf in the spring is like a buffet line on an empty stomach.  I think I'm going to play 50 times, so sell me 50 prepaid rounds.  Chances are I'll play 15 times.
  • Sell prepaid lesson packs - same concept as before, I'm more interested in improving my game now than in the fall, so sell me 10 lessons now instead of selling me 1 or 2 and hope I buy more later.
  • Capture your foot traffic - capture email addresses now and you can reap marketing dividends through the whole year.
  • Maximize your food and beverage - drop your $2.25 PowerAde and sell $3.00 Gatorade.  Drop your $ 1.25 16 oz. fountain drink and make your $1.75 24 oz. size your small and add a 32 oz. for $2.25.  There are a thousand more ideas like this, just do it.

Making an extra $10,000 in May is a lot easier than making an extra $10,000 in November, right?  Make hay while the sun shines.

If you don't like "make hay while the sun shines", try these:
  • Strike while the iron is hot.
  • Get while the gettin' is good.
Until next time.
