Build a Better Team
A recession is the perfect time to build a great team and a great business. Here are several steps you can take now!
- Protect Your Core Team. You know who they are – the ones that consistently deliver great results. Take the time to appreciate their contributions and get feedback on how they’d like improve their job or team. You’ll get some great insights that will help improve your business. If you’re performing any cost cutting or layoffs, give them reassurance that their job is secure.
- Minimize Your Marginal Employees. Conduct performance reviews. Give them two choices, 1. Let’s find a position within the company that you can excel in, 2. Find a job somewhere else. If you’re concerned about backfilling the position, don’t. You can’t run a great business in fear.
- Upgrade. There are more available employees due to unemployment or concerns about their current job. Additionally, if you’re doing well, you can attract top talent. Success breeds success.
- Be Better Than Burger King. Could you keep your job at Burger King if you regularly showed up late or didn’t show at all? Of course not. So, why tolerate it at your facility?
Does it work? I recently took the above steps by first meeting with my managers to identify the core and marginal employees. Then we had a company meeting. Some key messages:
- Proven performers have always been rewarded and will continue to be rewarded.
- You have opportunities to grow your career.
- We have to be better than Burger King.
The Result. We have a much stronger team. There is something magical about cutting dead weight.
- The core team feels more appreciated.
- Raises the bar for existing employees.
- Everyone has more time to focus on their tasks instead of depending on marginal results from marginal employees.
- As a team we’re getting more done with less people.
- Makes room for employees to take on leadership roles.
- Makes room to upgrade available positions.
