A Little Bit on Chip’s TOUR Academy.......A junior program LIKE NO OTHER!
After attending the “run of the mill” annual Junior Golf Camp, many youth leave feeling bored or stagnant. I confess, I have taught those boring junior camps in the past. Typically, the instructor spends 3 hours a day talking to the kids; lecturing on how to swing a golf club and hitting ball after ball and doing drill after drill….the typical focus being centered on only the golf swing. However, the golf swing is built around many other basic athletic skills.
In Chip’s TOUR Academy we will be focused on fundamental movement skills, which are great for any sport. We will teach your kids what today's best players did when they were juniors. It's all about getting your junior ready not just for golf but also for athletics in general.
When I was growing up I played a variety of sports besides golf: tennis, football, basketball, track, baseball, soccer and swimming. My father always encouraged me to be a well-rounded athlete. To this day, I feel that having played a variety of sports and being a well balanced athlete have helped me achieve success as a professional golfer. When I played on the PGA TOUR, we were surveyed about how active we were in other sports as a junior. It was fascinating to find out that just about everybody on TOUR was competitive in other sports besides golf. (To that end, golf was not many TOUR players’ #1 sport in high school or even in college!)
I want to build athletic confidence and bring FUN back into junior golf! I have incorporated a list of fun activities designed to enhance each junior’s fundamental movement skills. These skills include:
Locomotive Skills
• Running, Jumping, Dodging, Skipping, Hopping, Bounding and Sprinting
Stability Skills
• Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed, Change of Direction, Disassociation
Object Control Skills
• Throw, Kick, Strike, Catch, Dribble, Dodge
Awareness
• Space Awareness, Kinesthetic Awareness, Body Awareness, Rules
The world’s leading authorities on athletic development say that a child who develops a better base of fundamental movement skills will develop golf-skills at a faster rate and will peak at a higher level of expertise.
Let us not forget that this is a dedicated “Golf Academy”. We will have many other engaging and hands on golf specific activities including the short game, course management, rules, etiquette and full swing. Oh, and by the way, we will definitely be playing A LOT of golf!
In closing, my mission is to teach young minds and bodies how to be the very best they can be in golf, in athletics, and in LIFE. My hope is that these young people will have an engaging and memorable experience, all while learning important life long skills. Based on a concept of educating that “Total Athlete”, I want your child to learn and come to love what I consider to be the epitome of sports enjoyment…GOLF…the sport of a lifetime.
Looking forward to making your young athlete a star of the future in the new Chip's TOUR Academy at Hanging Rock Golf Club,
Chip Sullivan, PGA
